Chancellor Angela Merkel tells lawmakers that Germany isn’t likely to meet its goal of putting 1 million electric cars on its roads by the end of the decade.
The country had fewer than 80,000 EVs in service at the end of last year, according to Reuters. The news service cites experts who say a scarcity of charging facilities—about 7,400—and the limited range of EVs currently available have throttled demand.
Still, Merkel notes that the auto industry’s sudden rush to introduce EVs could produce an abrupt surge in sales when they hit the market in about 2020.
