Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz unit plans to create a sub-brand for a fleet of electric vehicles that will compete against Tesla and BMW’s “i” brand, reports Bloomberg News.
Sources tell the news service that Mercedes is developing four EVs—two sedans and a pair of crossover/SUVs—for the yet-to-be-named brand. The first model is expected to be introduced before the end of the decade.
Mercedes is scheduled to unveil an electric car at next month’s Paris auto show. That vehicle will have driving range of about 500 km (310 miles).
Previous reports indicate Daimler is developing a range of other EVs, including models for its Smart small car unit and electrified medium- and heavy-duty trucks.
The carmaker confirms that several new EVs are in the works but is mum on the specifics. The time has come to “earn money in e-mobility” over the next five to 10 years, Wolfgang Bernhard, who heads Daimler’s trucks unit, told reporters last week at an event for the company’s Urban eTruck prototype heavy-duty truck.
