Daimler AG says Ola Kaellenius, who heads sales and marketing for the company's Mercedes-Benz unit, will join the management board in January. He will continue his current duties.
The promotion moves the 45-year-old Kaellenius, who is Swedish by birth, onto the list of possible successors to Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche, who is 61.
The promotion also makes the board "younger and more international," notes Daimler Chairman Manfred Bischoff. Kaellenius previously headed Daimler's AMG performance unit and helped develop Formula One racing engines for Mercedes.
Earlier this week BMW and Volkswagen announced similar top management adjustments. BMW describes its selection of 49-year-old Harald Krueger to succeed Norbert Reithofer as CEO a needed generational shift to position the company for fundamental changes in the industry's approach to sustainable personal mobility.
