Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz unit is considering an all-electric version of its Sprinter commercial van in conjunction with the next-generation model due by the end of the decade, Trucks.com reports.
The program, which hasn’t received final approval, is described as being in the early planning stages by Volker Mornhinweg, director of Mercedes-Benz Vans. He favors a full-electric model over a plug-in hybrid to reduce weight, complexity and costs.
Noting there is growing demand for electric delivery vans, Mornhinweg lists potential customers as Germany’s Deutsche Post national mail operations and other European courier services. Such applications would allow an electric Sprinter to operate on relatively short routes within its driving range and return to a central recharging station at the end of the day.
