Daimler AG says the new plug-in hybrid variant of the Mercedes-Benz GLE crossover will be able to travel 100 km (62 miles) in electric-only mode.

Due next year, the plug-in GLE is on pace to be the first plug-n hybrid vehicle to hit the 100-km mark on the new WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light Duty Vehicle Test Procedure), research chief Ola Kallenius tells Automotive News.

The newspaper notes that BMW AG plans to launch its own 100-km plug-in hybrid. But that vehicle isn’t expected until after 2020.

Most current hybrids have an electric range of 50 km (31 miles) or less. That’s the minimum needed to qualify for EV credits under China’s New Energy Vehicle regulations that start in 2019.

Kallenius is coy about revealing what type of engine the GLE plug-in hybrid will use. Mercedes is launching diesel-electric plug-in variants of its C- and E-Class vehicles this year.

In addition to the plug-in hybrid, the new GLE crossover will have a 48-volt mild-hybrid option. That system will be mated with a 3.0-liter inline-six gasoline engine.

Daimler plans to offer electrified versions of all its models in the future, including at least 10 all-electric Mercedes and Smart vehicles by 2022.
