The 2016 model will hit dealerships in mid-November. Mercedes also will offer coupe, AMG performance and plug-in hybrid variants of the vehicle.

The GLC's styling is aligned with the C-Class sedan including a twin-bar grille and distinctive LED headlights for which the renamed crossover owes the "C" in its name.

The five-seat GLC is slightly taller and nearly 5 inches longer and 2 inches wider than the outgoing GLK, yielding a roomier interior. The larger size was precipitated by last year's introduction of the smaller GLA, which now serves as Mercedes' entry-level crossover. The new GLC will compete directly against the BMW X3 and Audi Q5 crossovers.

Despite its increased size, the rear-drive GLC is 176 lbs lighter than the GLK, thanks to its extensive use of aluminum and high- to ultra-high-strength steels. Interior appointments also are borrowed from the C-Class, including high-end materials, upgraded dashboard and an infotainment system with either a 7- or 8.4-inch display.

An optional air suspension system lowers the vehicle half an inch when drivers select the Sport drive setting. An available off-road package boosts ground clearance by as much as 2 inches and allows drivers to choose among five modes for various conditions and terrains.

The 4Matic all-wheel-drive system has a 45/55% torque split between the front and rear axle. For the first time, Mercedes will build a right-hand drive configuration for international markets.

Engine choices initially will be limited to a pair of 2.1-liter four-cylinder diesels in Europe, and a 2.0-liter gasoline four-banger in North America. The latter will produce 241 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. All engines will be mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission.

Fuel consumption for diesel and gasoline engines has been reduced by as much as 19% compared with the GLK, according to Mercedes.

The 350e plug-in hybrid variant due in 2016 will have an electric range of 21 miles. Combined output of its electric motor and gasoline engine is listed at 320 hp.
