Daimler AG’s Mercedes-AMG unit plans to drop the 4.0-liter V-8 engine in the C63 performance car in favor of a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder mill teamed with a mild-hybrid system when the next-generation model bows in 2022.

Sources tell Autocar the hybrid drivetrain will match the twin-turbo V-8’s 503 hp and best its torque output by 7% with 553 lb-ft. The engine is said to be an up-rated version of the M139 four-banger used in the Mercedes-AMG A45 hatchback, where it makes 416 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.

The hybrid system will feature an integrated starter motor and a small lithium-ion battery, according to Autocar. The smaller engine, which will be mated with a 9-speed automatic transmission, will improve the car’s overall weight distribution.

Mercedes plans coupe, sedan and hatchback versions of the new AMG C63.
