McLaren Automotive Ltd. says its P1 hybrid supercar will deliver 903 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. The car, along with its price, will be publicly revealed at the Geneva auto show next month.
The P1's midship powertrain includes of the 3.8-liter, twin-turbocharged V-8 engine used in the company's MP4-12C supercar, but upgraded to make 727 hp and 531 lb-ft of torque.
A McLaren-developed electric motor bolts directly to the V-8's block, contributing 176 hp and 192 lb-ft of torque. A 212-lb battery located just behind the seats can propel the car in electric-only mode for about six miles. The company hasn't indicated the top speed under those conditions.
The engine and motor feed their output to a dual-clutch, seven-speed transmission that drives the rear wheels. The car emits less than 200 g/km in the European test cycle, according to McLaren.
The company points out that the instantaneous torque of the electric motor gives the P1 quicker throttle response than is possible with a piston engine alone. The motor also enables faster upshifts by applying negative torque at the moment the gear change occurs, thus reducing engine speed instantly to match the new ratio.
