Mazda Motor Corp. says it is preparing a global campaign to replace hatch support-strut anchors that could corrode and break in 2.2 million of its SUVs and hatchback cars.
The callback covers 390,000 vehicles in Japan and 1.8 million units in various overseas markets. Affected models were produced between December 2007 and December 2015.
If the strut bracket breaks while the hatch is open, the hatch could fall and injure a person standing below it. Mazda says the problem is most likely to affect vehicles that are exposed to winter road salt.
