In December Mazda Motor Corp. will begin recalling 1.4 million car it made in 1992-1998 to replace ignition switch grease that could catch fire.

Affected models are the 323, 626, 929, MPV, MX-3, MX-6 and Protege. Mazda says too much grease was applied to electrical contacts inside the switch. The material could carbonize and short-circuit the contact points, causing the switch to heat up enough to smoke or catch fire, according to the company.

Mazda tells the National Highway Safety Administration it has been monitoring the problem since 2001. The company decided to launch a recall in the U.S. after Japan’s safety agency noted another manufacturer had recalled vehicles that used the same switch.
