Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., India’s largest carmaker, says it aims to standardize safety features in all its models, beginning with the Baleno hatchback launched this week.
The company provided no timetable for the rollout. But it notes the Baleno’s debut has occurred ahead of government requirements, which are slowly being developed.
Currently only some mid- and top-end models in India are equipped with such safety equipment as dual airbags and antilock brakes, notes The Economic Times. India represents about 1% of the world’s population, but with more than 200,000 fatalities per year, the country accounts for 15% of global traffic deaths, according to the World Bank.
Maruti Suzuki plans to market the Baleno in India through its new Nexa upscale retail chain and offer it in multiple markets elsewhere.
