Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. plans to open about 35 "premium" dealerships over the next year to bolster sales of larger vehicles, The Economic Times reports.

The new network will operate under the same Maruti Suzuki brand in a handful of India's largest cities. It offers a fancier ambience and focus on new higher-end niche vehicles from Suzuki, according to the company.

ET says the aim is to broaden Maruti Suzuki's image beyond that of a small-car specialist. Maruti controls about half the Indian passenger car market with popular small sedans such as the Alto, Swift and DZire.

The new dealer network will specialize in such models as the recently launched Celerio hatchback and Ciaz sedan. The upcoming SX4 SCross crossover vehicle due in April also is likely to be represented by the new network.
