A piston-powered 500 retails in the U.S. for about $17,300. The 500e electric variant costs $32,700. Marchionne's comment about losses on the latter model suggests the actual cost of the EV is close to $47,000.

Like many industry executives, Marchionne prefers regulations that set fuel economy and emission targets but allow manufacturers to decide how to achieve them. He estimates that meeting federal fuel economy standards in 2025 will require at last half of FCA's U.S. sales mix to be hybrids.
