Malaysia’s government is stepping in to force owners of cars with explosion-prone Takata airbags to get their vehicles fixed.
The country says seven people have been killed in Malaysia by the defective devices, all of them riding in Honda City minicars. But at least seven other brands also are being recalled for the same issue.
The country’s transport authority says it will take over the recalls because more than 358,000 owners—more than two-thirds of them driving Toyota or Nissan brand vehicles—have not responded to manufacturers’ recall attempts.
The government will send two more recall notices to owners. If those don’t provoke a response, the transport authority says owners will be fined and barred from renewing their vehicles’ registration.
