LG Electronics, Qualcomm Connect on 5G V2X Tech

LG Electronics Inc. and Qualcomm Inc. have agreed to jointly develop so-called vehicle-to-everything and fifth generation (5G) cellular-based technologies for next-generation connected vehicles.
The development team will be based at LG Electronics’ Science Park in Seoul, Korea. The two companies, which have worked informally together for years, will start the new partnership immediately.
The companies say the latest cellular-V2X systems offer twice the performance at lower costs than dedicated-short-range-communications over existing mobile communication networks. Following the completion of current field tests in Asia and Europe, the partners aim to launch commercial applications by 2020.
Emerging 5G systems are expected to operate at speeds of 5 gigabits per second—more than five times the speed of current 4G LTE modems and with one-tenth the latency. This will allow for improved cloud connectivity and fully autonomous vehicle capability, according to proponents.
LG and Qualcomm are members of the 5G Automotive Association e.V., which was formed last autumn to develop and promote the technology.
