Toyota Motor Corp.’s Lexus unit says its upcoming LS 500h hybrid-electric sedan will feature the multi-stage setup the company introduced last year in the LC 500h hybrid coupe.
The multi-stage architecture adds a 4-speed automatic transmission to the car’s hybrid system, which teams a 3.5-liter V-6 engine with a pair of electric motors. Lexus says the system replicates the continuous acceleration effect of a 10-speed transmission.
The first motor provides low-speed propulsion and serves as a generator that powers the transmission. The second motor delivers power for higher speeds and acceleration.
Lexus will take the wraps off the LS 500h next month at the Geneva auto show.
