The U.S. index of leading economic indicators, which rose 0.7% from January to February and 0.3% in March, declined 0.1% in April, the Conference Board reports.

The index is a gauge of economic prospects in the next three to six months. The board's gauges of current and lagging conditions rose 0.2% and 0.5%, respectively.

The New York City-based research group says the index reflects "an economy that's still struggling to gain momentum." Seven of 10 index measures rose last month. Gauges for employment housing and consumer confidence fell.
