Volkswagen AG's Lamborghini unit will offer a plug-in hybrid version of its upcoming Urus crossover/SUV, according to multiple media reports.

In separate interviews with Motor Authority and Green Car Reports, Maurizio Reggiani, who heads the Lamborghini's research and development operations, says the Urus will add a hybrid variant a first for the ultra-luxury brand sometime after the base model is launched in 2018. But he says weight and packaging consideration preclude using hybrid powertrains in future Lamborghini supercars.

The midsize Urus, which will ride on the same platform with the Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne and VW Touareg crossover/SUVs, will have true off-road performance capabilities, according to Reggiani.
