BMW AG has won a contract to supply 100 of its i3 electric cars to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The leased vehicles will be used in the department’s transportation fleet for non-emergency purposes, such as shuttling personnel and community outreach initiatives. Delivery of the vehicles already has started.
The LAPD chose the i3 after conducting a field trial with several other EVs. The department praised the i3 for its efficiency, acceleration, reliability, tight-turning radius and connectivity integration for fleet management.
Powered by an electric motor and 22-kWh lithium-ion battery, the i3 generates 170 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. It has a driving range of 100 miles.
Greenlots, a unit of Singapore-based Zeco Systems Pte Ltd., is supplying the LAPD with 100 of its Level 2 chargers and four DC fast chargers.
