South Korea is introducing a special license plate for electric vehicles that will enable them to be quickly identified by surveillance cameras for instant discounts at parking lots and on highway toll roads, the Korea Herald reports.
The government is asking the public to vote among four proposed designs between now and Sept. 11. Korea’s transport ministry plans to test 100 of the winning plates in October before rolling them out nationwide. All four designs already have completed recognition tests by unmanned traffic cameras.
Only about 2,800 EVs were in use in Korea at the end of 2015, the Herald says. It notes that the country’s commerce ministry aims to increase the total to more than 50,000 electrics by the end of 2017. The newspaper notes that Korea exported 12,000 EVs last year and aims to hike that volume to nearly 200,000 units by 2020.
