Hyundai Motor Co. and Ssangyong Motor Co. could face a total of 1.2 billion won ($1.2 million) in fines for misrepresenting the fuel economy of two SUV models, The Wall Street Journal reports.
Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport says the companies exaggerated the mileage ratings by as much as 8% for the Hyundai Santa Fe and Ssangyong Korando Sports models.
It is threatening to levy fines of 1 billion won against Hyundai and 200 million won against Ssangyong.
But Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy says its fuel economy tests show the disputed results are within an acceptable range of error. The trade ministry attributes the disparity to differences in test methods.
Hyundai says its is "very confused" by the fine and the discrepancy in test results.
Hyundai acknowledged in 2012 and last March it had overstated U.S. fuel economy ratings for multiple models. The Journal says the company and its Kia Motors affiliate agreed to compensate owners as much as $395 million. Hyundai blamed the overly optimistic U.S. ratings on test procedure errors.
