A district court in Tokyo turned down Carlos Ghosn’s request to be released on bail after nearly two months in jail on charges of financial misconduct.
The court offered no reason for denying bail. But it did say last week that Ghosn was considered a flight risk who might tamper with evidence. Ghosn’s lawyers have appealed the decision, which they say could be reviewed as quickly as tomorrow.
Lengthy incarcerations are the norm in the Japanese judicial system. Defendants such as Ghosn, who claim innocence, rarely receive bail ahead of their trial.
Prosecutors say the former Nissan-Mitsubishi chairman could be detained for another two months. Last week Ghosn’s attorneys said he might remain in jail for six months, about when his trial is expected to begin.
