The U.S. economy added 156,000 jobs in December, down from an upwardly revised 204,000 in the previous month, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The bureau says the growth was focused in healthcare and social assistance. But the lower total caused the jobless rate to widen to 4.7% from 4.6% in November.
Annualized growth in wages last month rose to 2.7%, the fastest rate since June 2009. The number of long-term unemployed was unchanged at 1.8 million people. The number of “discouraged” unemployed—those who have given up their search for a job—dropped to 426,000 from 663,000 in December 2016, according to the bureau.
