Tata Motors Ltd.'s Jaguar Land Rover unit hopes that sharing its knowledge about making aluminum vehicles with other carmakers ultimately will reduce costs for everyone, Automotive News Europe reports.
The online newspaper says JLR's Solihull assembly plant in the U.K. has been hosting visits lately by representatives from Audi, Ford, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. All have come at JLR's invitation to learn more about the British company's production and material handling techniques.
JLR tells ANE that sharing such information could lead to a more standardized approach to selecting grade of aluminum, determining tooling requirements and setting manufacturing techniques that could drive down production costs.
The company notes that today each manufacturer follows its own system of materials, rivets, bonding assembly and gauging to handle aluminum production. In some cases, it says, the resulting processes were developed mainly to avoid processes patented by a rival.
