Jaguar Land Rover Ltd. is preparing to hire about 5,000 engineers and other technical staffers in 2018, according to British media reports.
The plan, likely to be announced this week, aims to strengthen the carmaker’s capabilities in electronics and software for future electrified and/or autonomous vehicles. The reports note that a shortage of British engineers could prompt JLR to recruit overseas for some of the technicians it seeks.
The additional staff also will be needed to help the company meet its goal of hiking annual sales to 1 million units by 2020 from 544,000 in 2016. JRL exports about 80% of its domestic production, with Europe accounting for the largest regional market.
Last week JLR’s InMotion Ventures unit announced it has invested £19 million ($25 million) in U.S. ride-hailing service Lyft Inc. to support the company’s push into self-driving cars. The carmaker says it will provide Jaguar and Land Rover vehicle to Lyft for testing new mobility services.

Shifting Landscape of Technology Is a Never-Ending Education
Brent Donaldson, Senior Editor, Modern Machine Shop and Additive Manufacturing Magazine discusses how the shifting landscape of technology that all of Gardner’s writers and editors cover is a never-ending education. If we are truly doing our jobs, we will never feel like we’ve mastered them. As I continue writing and reporting for AM and MMS, it’s easy to imagine how these technologies’ interdependency will continue to grow. It also seems clear that this kind of reporting — the kind that requires editors to experience and share new manufacturing technologies and strategies — is the kind of reporting that only Gardner can produce with any depth. I’m grateful to be part of it.
