JLR Faces Big Recall in Europe for CO2 Emissions

Jaguar Land Rover Ltd. appears likely to recalls tens of thousands of its vehicles in Europe because their carbon dioxide emissions are greater than reported, Automotive News Europe says.
The issue, which affects mostly Jaguar and Land Rover models equipped with 2.0-liter diesels, was discovered by Britain’s vehicle certification agency. Some gasoline vehicles also could be involved. The agency estimates that 44,000 vehicles in the U.K. are involved, and it notes that the problem may well be widespread throughout Europe.
The targeted diesels were produced between 2014 and 2018 according to Safety Gate Rapex, the European Union’s product defect reporting system.
JLR says it is working on a repair. But owners fear that any adjustments to engine control software will diminish the performance of their vehicles. The carmaker also could face additional sanctions by European governments to cover lost tax revenue, since they tax owners according to certified CO2 emission levels.
