Chrysler Group LLC is likely to switch from steel to aluminum for the bodywork of the next-generation Jeep Wrangler SUV due in mid-2017, according to Automotive News.
AN, which cites no sources, says the new model will feature a more aerodynamic front end and windshield angle, Chrysler's 8-speed automatic transmission and perhaps a 4-cylinder diesel option.
The re-engineered Wrangler will be Jeep's biggest product overhaul over the next three years, the newspaper says. It notes that Jeep intends to roll out new or refreshed models throughout its entire product lineup.
The all-new Renegade mini-SUV, produced at Fiat SpA's factory in Melfi, Italy, will arrive at about the end of this year. The vehicle was unveiled in March at the Geneva auto show. It will share its chassis with the B-segment Fiat 500X mini-crossover.
Jeep also will introduce a redesigned Compass small SUV in mid-2016. The vehicle will ride on the same platform that carries the 2015 Chrysler 200, Dodge Dart and Jeep Cherokee.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee large SUV and Cherokee midsize SUV will get minor facelifts late next year and mid-2016, respectively. AN says the planned three-row luxury Grand Wagoneer SUV has been delayed until the second half of 2018.
