Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi and Toyota have pledged help fund a $1 billion government program in Japan to promote the use of electric vehicles.
Japan already has about 1,700 quick chargers and 3,000 conventional chargers in place. The program seeks to boost those numbers to 5,700 and 11,000, respectively, by an unspecified date.
Under the government plan, the Japanese government will fund about two-thirds of the cost of installing the new chargers. The four carmakers would contribute the balance and pay for some of the cost of operating the devices.
