Japan’s transport ministry has reprimanded Mitsubishi Motors Corp. for continuing to doctor its fuel economy data after it was told to stop in April, The Japan Times reports.
The scolding came after the ministry completed a third review of the company’s practices on Sept. 2. That was three days after MMC suspended sales of eight models after the ministry found the company continued to falsify fuel economy ratings after admitting four months earlier to doing so for 25 years with four minivehicle models.
“We’ve forgotten our principle of putting customers and compliance first,” Chairman Osamu Masuko told reporters. It isn’t the first time. MMC nearly collapsed 12 years ago after hiding customer complaints from government agencies and later admitting it covered up safety defects for nearly 30 years.
