Japan hopes to double the proportion of new vehicles equipped with automatic brake systems to 90% by 2020, The Japan Times reports.
The technology helps reduce frontal crashes by applying the brakes more quickly and forcefully than would a human driver. The system also initiated braking automatically when a distracted driver doesn’t react at all to the need to brake to avoid and imminent collision.
The report says the Japanese government will publicize the benefits of the technology and review possible lawmaking steps to require the systems.
