Jaguar Cars Ltd. has scrapped its proprietary infotainment operating system for a faster and far more flexible Linus open-source software platform.

The company tells Automotive News the InControl Touch Pro system that will debut in the Jaguar XF sedan late this year will be 10 times faster than the current infotainment platform. The system features a quad-core Intel chip and a 60-GB solid state hard drive.

Matt Jones, who heads infotainment development at Jaguar Land Rover Ltd., says InControl Touch's open-source operating architecture enables the carmaker to shop for the best voice recognition, mapping and media player software rather than relying on a single source for everything.

Jones tells AN that Jaguar has been able to use "chunks of software " from multiple suppliers to create better features. He points out the approach also will make it far easier for the company to update the system in the future.
