Jaguar Land Rover Ltd. appears likely to be the first among Europe’s luxury car makers to launch an all-electric SUV to compete with Tesla Inc.’s Model X crossover vehicle.
JLR says it will debut a production version of its Jaguar i-Pace electric crossover (pictured) in March and begin selling the vehicle some months later. Automotive News Europe cites data from LMC Automotive that indicates Porsche and Audi won’t begin building their own electric SUVs until the end of 2018 and in early 2019, respectively.
Jaguar has said the i-Pace will be able to travel more than 500 km (311 miles) per charge under European test procedures, or about 355 km (220 miles) under U.S. standards. Audi and Porsche also predict 500-km ranges for their electric crossovers.
JLR has hired Magna Steyr to assemble the i-Pace in Graz, Austria. Annual output has been estimated at 13,000 units. JLR has said it has 25,000 orders for the vehicle.
