Britain's Unite union tells the Financial Times it is pressing Jaguar Land Rover in contract talks for a legally binding pledge to keep all three of its U.K. factories open for an unspecified period.
The London-based newspaper says the demands reflect workers' anxiety about the security of their jobs as JLR expands its production worldwide. The company, which is owned by India's Tata Motors Ltd., is planning a factory in China.
Workers in the U.K. might take some solace in JLR's 370 million (€467 million) investment to upgrade its assembly plant in Solihull, England, to make the next-generation of its Range Rover flagship SUV. The spending, which the company disclosed late last week, included a new body shop to make the model's all-aluminum body.
