Tata Motors Ltd.'s Jaguar Land Rover unit tells Automotive News Europe it is conducting talks with several undisclosed candidates to help the company add hybrid powertrain technology.
JLR will introduce its first hybrid, a diesel-electric system for the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport SUVs, early next year. That powertrain uses technology from Ford Motor Co., its current engine supplier, to reduce carbon dioxide emissions 26% compared with standard diesel-powered models.
Analysts say Europe's 2015 emission standards will all but force the company to add more hybrid powertrains.
Last month, JLR said it would soon unveil three electric concepts: a mild hybrid, a plug-in hybrid and a full-electric vehicle all based on the Range Rover Evoque compact SUV. Partners in that project include British drivetrain specialist GKN, the engineering arm of the Williams Formula One racing team and British electric vehicle maker Zytek.
JLR also is investing in a new advanced research center in the U.K. Hybrids will be a key area of focus when the facility opens in 2016.
