Drivers in Ireland caught texting while driving now face a base fine of €1,000 and, for repeat offenders, a €2,000 fine and three months in jail, Automotive News Europe reports.
Ireland previously fined text offenders €60 and levied two penalty points against them for "driving without due care."
The stiffer sanctions, which took effect on May 1, elevate texting to an offense comparable to drunk driving and levies among the biggest sanctions anywhere in Europe.
Numerous studies say texting while driving is at least as dangerous as driving while drunk. They also confirm that most drivers agree texting is a bad idea, even though they do it.
