Falling food, fuel and energy prices cut the U.K.'s consumer price index to 0.3% in January. It was the lowest household inflation rate since the Office for National Statistics began tracking the measure in 1988.

January's core inflation, which ignores those volatile prices, was 1.4%.

The U.K.'s inflation rate has dropped from 1.3% last October to 1% in November and 0.5% in December. Last week the Bank of England said inflation could temporarily turn negative this spring.
