Hyundai Motor Co. is preparing to recall 173,000 Sonata midsize sedans in the U.S. to check for damaged electronics that could cause a loss of power steering.
The campaign targets corroded circuit boards in 2011 models built at Hyundai’s plant in Montgomery, Ala. Hyundai reports no crashes or injuries attributable to the flaw. The company discovered the problem by studying warranty repair claims.
Hyundai plans to notify affected owners at the end of May. Dealers will replace the electronic modules with an updated design that shields the circuit board with a protective coating.
