Hyundai Motor Co. says it is developing an all-electric vehicle with a 320-km (200-mile) driving range. The company plans to launch the vehicle in 2018.
The new EV was first reported last week by the Korea Herald. The newspaper says the vehicle will be an SUV built on a dedicated EV platform that eventually could accommodate a larger battery with a 300-mile range. It isn’t clear if the range estimates are based on the Korean or U.S. test cycles.
Hyundai plans to launch an electric variant of its Ioniq sedan this summer. That vehicle is expected to have a driving range of 105-120 miles. Kia will get an SUV version of the EV called the Niro.
Together, Hyundai and Kia plan to more than double their environmentally friendly models to 28—two more than they previously indicated—by 2020. The rollout is expected to include at least 12 hybrids, six plug-in hybrids, two EVs and two fuel cell models.
