Toyota Motor Corp. says hybrid-powered vehicles accounted for more than half its sales in Europe during the first quarter—a year earlier than the carmaker expected to reach the milestone.

Overall sales of Toyota and Lexus-branded vehicles in Europe slipped about 1% during the period year on year. But the company outperformed the rest of the market, thanks to a 14% gain for its hybrid models, to push TME’s market share up slightly to 5.2%.

Hybrids accounts for 51% of Toyota/Lexus first-quarter sales throughout Europe, and 61% in western Europe.

The carmaker offers 19 hybrid electric models in Europe, including new variants of the Toyota Corolla, RAV4 and Lexus UX. Two hybrid options (paired with 1.8- and 2.0-liter engines) are offered in the Corolla hatchback and Touring Sports models. Nearly 90% of the buyers for the RAV4 and UX crossovers opted for hybrid variants, according to Toyota.
