Lamborghini SpA is developing a plug-in hybrid powertrain likely to debut next year in the company’s upcoming Urus crossover/SUV.
Noting that SUVs can more easily accommodate the size of a hybrid electrical system, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann says it’s much easier to package a plug-in unit into such a vehicle and maintain a good power-to-weight ratio. The Urus has a “big advantage” when it comes to an electric architecture, he tells Auto Express.
The Lambo SUV will be built on a modified version of parent Volkswagen AG’s MLB platform that also carries the Audi Q7 and Bentley Bentayga. Urus deliveries are expected to start later this year or in early 2018 with annual production targeted at 3,000 units.
