Honda Motor Co. plans to introduce electric vehicles in 2022 that can be charged to run 240 km (150 miles) in 15 minutes, The Nikkei reports.
Achieving that performance will require a new type of battery system that can handle the stress of such high-speed charging. Honda plans to collaborate with a company to be selected later to develop the devices. The newspaper offers no details about the battery’s design or chemistry.
Direct-current fast chargers in Japan deliver a maximum 150 kilowatts of power. Last year Tesla Inc.’s much ballyhooed Supercharger systems—once touted as the world’s most powerful—increased their capacity to 145 kW from 135 kW.
But The Nikkei notes that developers in Europe and Japan expect to raise charger power levels to 350 kilowatts by 2020. The newspaper says Honda’s new battery will be developed specifically to accommodate the more powerful input.
