Honda Motor Co. will use next month’s Detroit auto show to unveil an all-new version of its Insight sedan, a coupelike five-seater slated to join its lineup in the U.S. next summer.

A teaser photo released earlier today reveals a stylish fastback profile with muscular front and rear fender arches. Honda says the new model will be larger than its compact Civic but smaller than the midsize Accord.

Honda promises the latest Insight will be a no-compromise “great car in its own right, independent of what’s happening under the hood.” The nameplate will for the first time adopt a two-motor hybrid system the company says will deliver best-in-class performance and fuel economy comparable to other compact hybrids.

The Insight nameplate debuted in 1999 as a tiny two-seater. Never a big seller, the swoopy car boasted a market-leading 70 mph on the highway, thanks to its aluminum construction, highly aerodynamic design and small piston engine with integrated electric assist.

A larger five-door hatch version of the Insight followed a decade later, also using the integrated electric assist system. But that car was relatively pricy relative to the modest gain in fuel efficiency it delivered.

Honda will assemble the new Insight at its factory in Greensburg, Ind., alongside the conventionally powered compact Civic sedan and CR-V crossover vehicle.
