Honda to Move Accord Hybrid Output from Japan to Thailand

Honda Motor Co. will relocate production of its midsize Accord hybrid sedan from Japan to Thailand late this year because of the latter country’s tax incentives on “green” vehicles, sources tell The Nikkei.
The carmaker currently makes hybrid Accords at its Sayama factory outside Tokyo. But that facility is scheduled to end production in March 2022. Honda already makes Japan’s right-hand-drive version in Thailand.
Honda will spend about 6 billion baht ($189 million) to ready its Thai plant to install hybrid powertrains for Japan-bound cars by the end of this year, according to The Nikkei. It says the facility also may supply hybrids to other Asia-Pacific markets, including Australia.
Honda delivers about 500,000 Accords per year worldwide, mainly in China and the U.S. The car, which is considered a flagship model in Japan, attracts about 2,000 buyers there.
