Honda Motor Co. says it will debut its first all-electric city car in Europe two years from now. The minicar also will be marketed globally.
The carmaker showed the three-door hatch, which resembles the Volkswagen Golf, as the Urban EV concept yesterday at the Frankfurt auto show.
The four-seater, which ride on an all-new platform, will be produced in Japan. Honda provided no details about the car’s range or electric powertrain.
Design features in the concept model include rear-facing cameras instead of outside mirrors, large-diameter wheels and a starkly minimal interior with a giant panoramic instrument panel screen that stretches across most of the dash and includes extended panels in the upper front doors. The car’s grill has a central display that can show messages and advice to other drivers.
Honda predicts that all-electric cars will account for about 5% of the European new-car market by 2019 when its EV reaches the market. The company anticipates annual sales of roughly 5,000 units.
