Honda Motor Co. says that within two years it will export more vehicles from North American than it imports to the region from Japan.

Honda is expected to export nearly 100,000 vehicles from the U.S. to more than 40 countries this year and import an estimated 150,000 units from Japan. (The company does not count vehicles shipped between Canada and the U.S. as exports.)

Honda's 1 millionth light vehicle for export an Accord midsize sedan bound for South Korea rolled off the assembly line at its Marysville, Ohio, factory today. The company says it has exported Honda- and Acura-brand finished vehicles and kits worth $22.2 billion from North America since it began such shipments in 1987.

The coming export increase will be linked to Honda's planned expansion of North American annual capacity to 1.9 million cars and light trucks in 2014 from the current 1.6 million units. The tally includes a new small-car facility in Mexico the company plans to open that year.

Building vehicles locally has become increasingly attractive to Honda as the yen strengthens and the U.S. forges free-trade deals with countries in Asia and South America.
