Honda Motor Co. will unveil a new electric sports car at next month’s Tokyo auto show.
The carmaker describes the compact coupe, dubbed the Sports EV Concept, as having a “friendly face and supple body surfaces.” A teaser sketch of the vehicle shows a swoopy roofline, bulging fenders and square tail lights.
The concept’s electric powertrain will be teamed with artificial intelligence technology, which Honda says will provide a “joyous and emotional” driving experience. The electric motor is expected to power the rear wheels.
Honda created an Electric Vehicle Development Div. last year and set an ambitious goal of deriving two-thirds of its sales from EVs by 2025. Earlier this month the company announced plans to introduce an all-electric city car—based on the Urban EV Concept hatchback displayed at the just-completed Frankfurt auto show—in 2019.
Honda doesn’t currently sell any battery-powered EVs. The company’s last compact sports was the S2000, which was discontinued in 2009.
