Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co. are recalling a combined 2.2 million vehicles to replace faulty airbag inflators supplied by Takata Corp.

Honda will recall slightly more than 2 million vehicles, including its Fit minicar. Nissan says it will repair about 130,000 vehicles, including its Cube multipurpose vehicle.

The two new campaigns bring to about 6.2 million units the total number of vehicles recalled in the past two years to replace flawed Takata airbag inflators.

The pyrotechnic devices can explode and spray the passenger compartment with shrapnel when the airbags are deployed. Takata attributes the defect to improper manufacturing and says the propellant may be susceptible to breakdown in humid conditions.

Last year BMW, Honda, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota recalled a combined 4 million vehicles worldwide to inspect and/or replace the inflators. Earlier this month Toyota launched a second campaign involving about 1.5 million vehicles to replace inflators that last year were merely inspected.
