Honda Motor Co. has stopped shipping American-made Acura RDX midsize crossover vehicles to China and is assembling them locally instead, The Nikkei reports.

The move avoids the 40% import tariff China began imposing on U.S.-built cars in July as a result of the escalating trade war between the two countries. Output of the cars is ramping up now at a plant operated by Honda partner Guangzhou Automobile Group Co.

The Nikkei says Honda began studying the production reassignment before the China-U.S. tariff battle began. The redesigned RDX will cost about 20% less than the previous model, which sells in China for 399,800 yen ($57,500), according to the newspaper.

Honda predicts the lower price will help it boost RDX sales in China to 10,000 units per year from about 1,000 vehicles previously.
