Honda Motor Co. is recalling its popular Fit minicar for at least the sixth time in Japan, on this occasion to fix flaws that could cause engine fires and loss of power steering.
Japan’s transport ministry says Honda will call back 164,400 Fit mini-hatches made between August 2013 and February 2016 to repair electronic engine controllers that could catch fire. The ministry reports six fires linked to the defect.
Honda also is recalling 118,700 Fit and Venzel crossover models to remedy a power steering flaw blamed for two crashes. The Fit and Venzel share the same platform. The campaign covers vehicles made in 2013-2015.
Bloomberg News notes that a wave of recalls affecting the redesigned Fit and other Honda models within the past three years triggered internal program restructuring and the resignations of Chairman Fumihiko Ike, President Takanobu Ito and senior executive Tetsui Iwamura.
