Honda Motor Co. has confirmed that a crash last July is the ninth in which an exploding Takata Corp. airbag inflator inflicted fatal wounds to the driver.
The crash involved a used 2001 model Honda Accord coupe that had been recalled to replace the inflator. Honda notified the original owner in 2010 and mailed a recall notice to the new owner one day before the crash.
All nine reported fatalities—eight of them in the U.S.—have involved Honda vehicles. But essentially the same Takata inflator device also is being recalled by 11 other vehicle manufacturers.
The 12 campaigns involve a combined 23 million driver- and passenger-side inflators in 19 million vehicles in the U.S. alone. Roughly 17 million additional vehicles are being recalled in other markets.
